Fluttershy's timeline

I love drawing Flutters, her colours made her look so delicate and gentle :3 The only thing is that I can't do her mane. Ugh. Oh well, I'll have to learn that, too xD Anyway, before Fluttershy's backstory, a little summary about her race itself:

Pegasi:
A newborn Pegasus is extremely small and light. Its wings are shorter than its legs and are completely useless. They're covered in fur and few plumes, so they're very soft and warm at contact. The foal can't move them until it's two months old; at that age they're still unusable but the foal gets to... "know" them and understand how they "work" (nerves, muscles and all those things). Pegasi don't have a particular age when they start to fly, it's usually around 4 years after their birth but every foal is unique and only the strongest and most skilled learn how to rise from the ground when they're 3 years old. When they're 2 years old, most foals start to flap their wings so they can improve their speed when running. This is an habit that Pegasi tend to maintain even when older. The winged ponies teach their foals how to fly by picking them by the tail and throwing them in the air. The little thing starts to move its wings, but at the first attempts it fails and it drops on a soft surface, as planned by its parents. And so, the foal slowly starts to actually fly, and after the first time it doesn't drop, its parents stop this "exercise" and let the foal learn by itself what to do. Not that they completely abandon it, but, well, you know what I meant. Feathers (the ones that have the same colour as the Pegasus' mane) appear when the foal is 1 year old, and they never stop growing until the pony is 16. Pegasi can have 2 or 3 types of feathers. Most of them have got 3 types (like Fluttershy or Firefly) : these Pegasi are great at diving and have a strong endurance, but the ponies (like Rainbow or Twi) which have only 2 types are faster and agiler. Feathers are delicate and proof at the same time. They can survive a rock fall, but if dyed or neglected, they can cause troubles to their "owner" and can make flight really difficult and painful. Because of this, they need a constant and frequent care and a lot of exercise (they have muscles as well, after all) every day. 
Pegasi are much lighter and, usually, smaller than Unicorns or Earth Ponies. Their bones aren't hollow, unlike birds', but they are thin enough so that the strong wings can lift the animal from the ground. Pegasi have an incredible sight (nothing like Griffins' or other creatures like Windigoes, but still pretty good) and their hearing is their best sense: they could hear a whisper in the middle of a storm. It's quite rare for a female Pegasus to have more than 2 children. It's ever more unusual that the mare gives birth to a couple of twins, since pregnancy is extremely painful for Pegasi: birds lay eggs, but this doesn't happen with Pegasi and ponies in general, which are mammals. The winged fetus needs a lot more energy to grow than a non-winged one. This happens with Unicorns, as well.

3 Months Old
Fluttershy was born a little heavier than the average, but much smaller. Her parents didn't think she would have become a slender and beautiful mare, when they first saw her. The young filly loved to curl up next to her parents, but most against the green body of her mother. She, however, never really appreciated it very much, and she sometimes avoided these types of contact with her daughter.
In this first picture, we can see a very young and small Fluttershy, gazing intrigued at her father's feather. When she could walk, she loved to pick her dad's soft feathers and amass them, so she could sleep on a new "sofa".

5 Years Old
Still unable to fly, at this age Fluttershy was very playful and loved making friends. However, she at the Flight School, the teacher was starting to expect something more than flying at a low height for only a few meters. Now more than half of the classroom could fly quite well, and there were also two or three foals who had learned how to fly very young. Fluttershy barely could. It was now that her already best friend Rainbow Dash (they knew each other since they were little fillies) began to stand for her against few foals that bullied the yellow filly. 

16 Years Old
After the suicide of her mother, Flutterhy and Rainbow Dash's bond intensified. Also because Flutters went living by Dash's family, the two fillies spent almost all of their time together. Fluttershy "learned" (or, better, improved greatly her miserable flying skills) how to fly thanks to the blue Pegasus, who's one year younger than the pink maned one. At those times, since she had to take care of her new sister, Rainbow was not that daredevil and she always refrained from doing stupid things. Not that this angelic behavior lasted much, but, eh, it's Rainbow Dash we're talking about. 
Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash spent almost all of their time together, having fun, flying, taking walks or naps. During this particular activity, they preferred curling up against one another and feel their breaths in sync. (Hey, take those spread and half-spread wings as you want. I don't ship these two, but I think they've been together for quite sometime...)

21 Years Old
The Fluttershy we know nowadays. A gentle, shy, delicate and beautiful mare that loves her friends more than anything else. As years pass, and as she becomes even more beautiful, stallions won't give up on hoping to date her, and will always ask her. But since the filly isn't interested, she'll just keep their names. Why? Because she loves seeing Rainbow's face becoming green for envy every time the yellow Pegasus counts how many suitors she has.
